Sperm Health

Male infertility is on the rise and accounts for over 40% of all infertility cases. Supporting sperm health is always considered in every infertility case, regardless of having a “normal” semen analysis. There are many pitfalls when looking at a semen analysis and should not be the only factor considered in any fertility case. Having numbers in the lower range of being normal can mean suboptimal fertility. This was stated in an article written by the America Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM):

“Sperm parameters that predicted male fertility were sperm concentration >48 million/mL, sperm motility >63%, and sperm morphology >12% normal (strict criteria). Parameters that predicted male subfertility were sperm concentration <13.5 million sperm/mL, sperm motility <32%, and sperm morphology <9% normal.”

Looking a bit closer into the numbers can give more insight into another possible cause of your infertility. I consistently see suboptimal levels and will always treat for sperm health, along with egg quality. Remember they are 50% of the picture!

Diet, lifestyle, hormones, stress, radiation, toxins are all areas that can effect sperm health. Dependent on each case, specific recommendations are given to ensure the male is producing top quality sperm. Various minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants are given on a case by case basis as well to improve sperm parameters.

A double-blind, placebo controlled, randomized study done in 2009 showed that supplementing with 600mg of N-acetyl-cysteine and 200mcg of selenium for 26 weeks, improved all semen parameters. Administering both had additive benefits.

Vitamin C and E, Zinc, Folate, Carnitine, and many others have shown to be beneficial for sperm health and has translated to higher pregnancy rates when indicated.

At TruMed, we also offer fertility IV’s that focus on improving one’s sperm and egg quality.

I always strive to have an individualized approach to each infertility case so I am able to identify possible hidden areas that need improvement to enhance your chances of conceiving.

In good health,
